Centre for Climate Engagement

The most important challenge for society today

The Hughes Hall Centre for Climate Engagement was established to increase awareness of climate change mitigation 而且 adaptation on the boards of private companies 而且 the need for urgent action.

The effects of climate change are already reaching key thresholds that will adversely impact upon sustainable development. The need for education 而且 action for climate mitigation, adaptation 而且 finance has never been more urgent; individual citizens, 公司, non-governmental organisations 而且 governments all have a role to play.

  • 皇冠官方APP客户端的使命 is to encourage academic excellence in climate law, governance 而且 organisational change, 而且 to translate 而且 transfer this knowledge to corporate boards to accelerate the race to net zero emissions 而且 climate resilience.

This situation is especially acute within the boardrooms of listed companies where, 很少有例外, board members are not yet engaged sufficiently with the climate agenda. Many boards have not given it the priority that it deserves, 而且 some have not discussed it at all. Although the UK’s share of worldwide emissions is small 而且 reducing, UK business has a global reach through its supply chains 而且 provision of capital 而且 can have a significant impact in tackling climate change.

A general focus of the Centre is on how levers are best used to get the boards of corporate organisations to accelerate action. The emphasis is on the role of law 而且 regulation, of reporting requirements for 公司, 而且 of how the financial sector including banks 而且 investors can exert influence on 公司. We need a better underst而且ing of the proper balance between the use of “sticks” 而且 “carrots” as levers; 而且 of techniques of persuasion using insights of 市场营销 而且 psychology.

The research element of the Centre encourages scholarship in law, regulation 而且 governance but also in fields such as psychology, 市场营销, 经济学, 金融和管理. Legal studies could include aspects of company law, such as the fiduciary duties of directors 而且 investors; finance 而且 investment law; consumer protection law; competition law; the role of insurers; regulations that govern the financial reports of companies; 而且 other incentive structures for corporate boards. The Centre also enables PhD 而且 post-doctoral researchers interested in climate change to advance their academic objectives by engaging with the Centre.

The Centre seeks to act as an independent 而且 trusted intermediary between Cambridge academia, the corporate 而且 financial communities 而且 government, drawing on a wide range of disciplines alongside climate science 而且 law.  We work across the University but in particular with the University’s 剑桥零.

Working together to combat climate change

  • 行业:公司, through board leadership, increase their actions to mitigate 而且 adapt to the effects of climate change by addressing their own individual risks 而且 liabilities; to shape future regulatory frameworks; 而且 to participate in a growing global green economy.
  • Hughes Hall: The College, as part of its Bridge project, has a platform to facilitate the participation of graduate students, senior members 而且 alumni, 而且 thus engage the next generation of academics 而且 business leaders in taking action on climate.
  • Academia: Research impact is increased by informing changes in legal, regulatory 而且 other systems to support climate mitigation 而且 adaptation, 而且 by translating insights to enable businesses to contribute more effectively to the sustainable development agenda.
